I have to say - I LOVE the new Inspire™ Console with Attachable TV we got at our local gym.

They address so many of the problems I have with having an iPhone/iPod in the gym.

First off, you attach your iPhone/iPod to the iPod cable and place it on the holder area designed for the size of an iPhone/iPod. (( Another issue I've had with iPod/iPhone in the gym... where to put them. And don't say wear them. The iPhone/iPod Touch are both _way_ too big to be wearing around the gym. Again having tray storage space designed for the iPhone/iPod solves this issue.))

Upon attaching it, you are prompted on the screen to see if you want to record your workout progress to your attached device. Not something I use, but still very cool.

When you press the "media" button you get a menu that lets you browse the content on your iPhone/iPod.

It supports Audio and Video content. Under video you can watch your movies/tv shows straight off the iPod directly on the screen in front of you in widescreen.

One problem here. The screen seems to be locked in "widescreen" mode. iPod content is in 3:2 aspect ratio and the widescreen monitor is 16:9 aspect ratio. So the movie I watched was horizontally stretched. I'm gonna try to convert a movie to 16:9 aspect ratio and see if iTunes will let me sync that to the iPhone or not. I think having it in 16:9 instead of iPod 3:2 will fix this problem.

Next up, and this is probably my favorite part, and solves one of my biggest pet peeves of the iPhones/iPods ---> It charges your devices WHILE you are viewing your content. How cool is that?

My peeve is that I go to the gym and my iPod battery is always flat because I forget to charge it... and even when charged the charge only last for 2 or 3 visits to the gym. Having the equipment charge the device while you use it solves that problem. Great idea!

I watched a 1 hour 15 minute animated movie and when I left the station my iPhone battery was at 96% full.

LOVE IT!

Now if only I could get the aspect ratio issues resolved I think I'll buy a season of Dexter from iTunes for viewing in the gym ! :)

Dear [info]darkmoon,

You wrote, "This is not a tyranny."

So why was my post here referencing the post The illogical process of syncing under MacOS X deleted here without any warning or discussion.

Greetings, one of your friendly neighborhood community maintainers here.

I would like to address a few things regarding some recent posts in this community.

First of all, criticism of Apple and Apple products is welcome here. This is not a tyranny. However, that said, if you are posting said critique, be prepared to defend your position logically, and please do not make said critique by posting a link to a post in a different community. The flip side of this request, of course, is that if you wish to engage in a discussion with a differing opinion from the original poster, please keep the discussion to the topic of the post. Do not present your side of the argument in either case by personally attacking your fellow community members. Acting dismissive, while not strictly forbidden, is not a good debate tactic and tends to undermine your position.

Second, I wish to remind you all that we do, in fact, have community maintainers to do community maintainer tasks, such as removing/warning posts/posters as appropriate if the community rules or LJ TOS are violated. We are all three of us busy people, but we do have an email address that can be used to reach all three of us in the community profile, and we do read our email even if we're only skimming LJ itself. Please, rather than taking matters into your own hands and providing your own interpretation of what is and is not allowed in the community, or whether or not "Macintosh" includes "iPod" (for the record, it does; this community was created when iPods were but a twinkle in Steve Jobs's eye), use that email address to contact us, and let us take any heat from posting messages like this one instead of you.

Weird errors

  • Dec. 30th, 2009 at 3:36 PM
This may be more of a FF question, but I wouldn't know where to ask that and I'm a Mac user, so this is my starting point. Feel free to point me in the right direction.

Using the latest version of Firefox, for the past day or so I have been getting weird errors. Things like 'your browser sent a request this site could not understand', and 404 pages that magically go away when I refresh the page. Then, today I see why I am getting these errors:

removing airport password

  • Dec. 29th, 2009 at 8:36 PM
How does someone remove the stored Airport password to a particular network on a Powerbook? I want to let a relative use my Powerbook, but I don't want them to be able to access the internet which is the wifi in this house. For some reason I cannot figure out how to remove the password I've used to get onto the wifi network.

Thanks in advance.

EDIT: Just figured it out, it's all about keychain!

very slightly off topic, but Apple related

Has anyone had any personal experience with a solar charger/storage battery and either an iPhone or iPod Touch (2g)?

I spend a fair amount of time outdoors canoeing and camping and I was hoping to get something that I can use to keep both my phone (LG Lotus) and iPod charged for multi day canoe trips. The price ranges vary and some of both the expensive and the cheap seem kinda sketchy.

Argh there's something wrong with my battery. Gosh, idk why my MacBook has been so rude to me lately but this one's the worst of all my problems.

When running on battery power, when it gets low-ish... I'd say less than 20%... the entire computer just shuts off. It doesn't give me a warning to connect to my AC adapter soon and it doesn't even get to red or anything on the battery meter. It just shuts off.

NOOOOWWWW.... the battery is constantly stuck on "Finishing Charge..." when connected to the AC adapter.

Should I just go ahead and schedule an appointment at the Apple Store or is there something I can do to remedy these battery malfunctions on my own?
Hiya folks, got two questions for the group and I'm hoping some one can steer me in the right directions.

I'm running a Duel Core Mini and it's starting to slow down on me. I suspect it's partially due to the age of my processor. The other problem probably has more to do with the size of my HD. Starting to run out of room here, so I went out and got a 1TB external figuring I could offload a movie or two, my  music + pics, and a few other things that might be slowing the system down. Basically pare the internal HD down to the OS and run everything else external. Here's my first Q;

1) How does one migrate iTunes from one drive to the another without
    compromising accounts or permissions?

I've also recently had a G4 iBook given too me. Weirdly enough it runs faster than my Mini, however I've got one problem with it. I tried to play a video DVD on it's internal dvd drive and, well, now I can't get the damn disk out of it. When I try to eject the DVD dismounts from the desktop, the machine clunks, wheezes and  grinds, then the DVD re-mounts and pops back up on the desktop. This particular flavor of iBook does NOT have a manual eject and I've tried everything they recommend in the apple tech help forum. Including taking the battery out and resetting the system clock. Here's my other Q:

2) Short of going in with a set of pliers and ruining the Drive / DVD how,
the HELL, do you get a DVD out of an iBook with no manual eject?

At this point I'm about ready to take it down to the apple store and have them take a look at it. Maybe even see if putting a new drive in an OLD machine might be, in any way, cost effective. After all the machine was GIVEN to me. A few bucks in the hole is, pretty much, just an investment. IF it's ONLY a few bucks.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
No big deal, but I thought I'd throw this out to any power users or people otherwise more clueful than I. Read on if you'd like to check out a disk permissions question.

Cut for the uninterested. )

Dashboard: what's the point?

  • Dec. 22nd, 2009 at 11:41 PM
Do any of you use it? I've been trying, on and off, for awhile now to try to justify its existence by finding some type of application for it, but I've been largely unsuccessful.

The only possible niche I've found for it is to run informational widgets to conglomerate a lot of ready-to-display information (e.g. weather, CPU usage, etc) on the screen at once and quickly without having to launch full-fledged applications or visit a bunch of web pages. I'm also trying it out now for lightweight versions of one-shot applications, i.e. applications I'd launch to use once quickly and then quit (calculator, dictionary, thesaurus, and stuff like that).

What do you all think?

Unwanted talking - solved

Okay I don't know how the kid did it but a kid I was babysitting got ahold of my computer for all of 45 seconds yesterday and ever since it like...says out loud whatever I am doing. If I open up a new page in firefox it goes "firefox has a new page" etc with any and every program. If I scroll over the dock it says dock. It's driving me nuts and I went through system preferences but I can't figure out how to turn it off. :/ please help.

edit

Apparently it was voice over in universal access. :D
